Few weeks ago I was planning to make a drawer unit. My carpenter estimated it will require two sheets of 6ft x 3ft ply board. Apparently he was right. The layout he made was showing lot of odd shaped off cuts. I thought to use a simple software to check. These days smart phones have enogh computing power to do some serious number crunching. It is pity no to use it.
I use a rather old android phone. It has a software repository in play store. A search in play store gave me a nice utility called “Cut list Optimizer”. It is a nice utility to layout rectangular shapes in sheets efficiently. The software first attempts to reduce material waste. Once it has found a good solution it further tries to improve the solution to reduce number of cuts required. It works on my Android version 4.1.2, recommend this to all person who has to cut sheets to different sizes.
It took me about 5 min to download and install software. Let us see how to use the software. First thing I needed to do was to enter list of cut sheets that I needed. Then I enter the sheets that was in stock. Here one must ensure that the sheets in stock are sufficient to cover the requirements. Few extra sheets does not matter. Software will find the minimum number of sheets required.
After entering the sheet sizes, I touch the green button to start computing. Initial 5min nothing happened. Then I could see some solutions being generated. After some 10 minutes I got the solution. It says that I would require just one sheet of plywood for the unit.
It also give the information in tabular form.
Apart from this cutting layout generator there are plenty of other optimization softwares that work on even smart phones. Use optimization softwares to reduce wastage.
